Nov 15, 2011 - GM Petrosian had several famous games where his winning move was something totally un-obvious to the school age player (which we were at that time.) No flashy sacrifice. Nothing overt. But mysterious and subtle. Like a mysterious Kg8-h8! or Kg8-h7! in a castled position to magically achieve a strategically crushing position. I don't have a game reference just from recollection. A unique style of play, Petrosian-esque.

Nov 15, 2011 - you missed a very important move to comment : in 54:24 just take knight(so queen is threatened). black wins a piece so why Petrosian didnt go for it? thanks kingscrusher for the great videos

Nov 15, 2011 - At 12:35, I don't understand why white doesn't play the f2 rook to e2 to defend the pawn? Why did white just move the king? Yes, I know the c4 pawn will fall by the bishop, and attack the rook, but then the rook can just move back to e1 still keeping an eye on the pawn. At least this continuation to me would save white the 3rd pawn that was eventually lost.

Nov 16, 2011 - The games in the video are showin in PGN format in the description of this video
diggitus Says:
Nov 16, 2011 - @diggitus @diggitus Sorry! It was in there, and I missed it. (It was a bit buried though.) I looked it up, this game is Old Indian, Ukrainian Variation. Love your show, man.
diggitus Says:
Nov 16, 2011 - and, the pgn is in the description just like you said. walking slowly backwards out of the room now.
randalph Says:
Nov 16, 2011 - Probably two explanations: 1. He wanted to keep Queens on the board to threaten his opponent on the light squares 2. If he goes for your line he loses his impressive centre pawn avalanche armada ;). Just look at the position after those exchanges. It doesn't look that good anymore. I guess it'S probably still wining for Petrosian, but he had other preferences.

Nov 16, 2011 - interesting enough... the first game, I couldn't help but to think about what you said about "backward rooks"... almost was a theme of that game that was accentuated by the positional sac! The two ideas seem very intreging put together, comparing your over the board game to that one with the only major difference is that in your game, was you game was a little more simplified.... but almost the same sort of idea

Nov 16, 2011 - 0:52:13 What will Houdini play as white here? He did not mind the threat of whites bichop/queen-battery and took on c5, and its equal. Blacks king will zigzag out of it.
gunuffimoo Says:
Nov 16, 2011 - 0:52:48. To answer another of your questions: Here black is clearly winning. D5 is Houdinis fourth choice here (-8.66). It prefers Qc6 (-12.54).
mattiassollerman Says:
Nov 16, 2011 - Houdini 2 gives these numbers at depth 21: 27... Qc8 (-3.16); 27 dxc3 28 Qxc3 (-0.56) White has a strong attack on the central files with moves such as Bd6 coming. Don't forget also that black is already down an exchange. This is highly instructive as I guess most of us would get nervous being down an exchange and feel eager to finally "cash in" and we end up with a theoretical advantage but very messy position.

Nov 16, 2011 - Thanks for the video. Ah, I always guess the move you ask, I should definitely consider joining you during livestream. I like Petrosian but his style is so far from me... I consider sacrifices on every move and it works sometimes... Nice series!
ex0duzz Says:
Nov 16, 2011 - Yep. Rxh3 was the first move i thought of. And when Petrosian plays any sac, you can be sure it's sound.. haha. Or that's what i remember being said anyway. Ie he doesn't play 'speculative sacs' like TAL, but his sacs are always 'sound' and can be crunched out or the position after the fireworks(forcing moves, ie Rxh3) is clearly in his favour..
securuslol Says:
Nov 17, 2011 - Hey, it'd be cool if you could cover Alekhine. I've heard he wasn't a very nice guy hehe, not like Tal at least. But he must've played really good to defeat Capablanca.
ex0duzz Says:
Nov 17, 2011 - at 54:24, can't black just take the knight on c3, and then if BxQ on c7, then just pawn takes Queen on d2, just simply winning a piece? Why does black have to play run away from the bishop with Qc8 to attack the f5 pawn? I don't see much counterplay after black just wins a free knight.. Yeah, he's down the exchange, but a free knight.. and i think that black can still win the f5 pawn after castling and using bishop+rook to attack f5. OR black can just take on a5 immediately instead of Qc8 too..
ex0duzz Says:
Nov 17, 2011 - But yeah. 3 pawns and that position is still very good too i must admit. No counterplay whatsoever i guess.. and i guess it's keeping in principle with the way Petrosian plays(ie exchange sac must be sound and he probably saw all that coming, ie all the 3 pawns dropping for the 'rook sac'/exchange and a position where black has nothing whatsoever). But yeah. Nice selection of games, i was expecting more 'dry' positional games, but there was always exchange sacs in most of them. Nice KC. =]

Nov 17, 2011 - I play this end game system shown at the start. I love it when Patzers go for the exchange on d8 thinkings it's good. Black gets a very nice game and the basic principle is to generally put the rooks on the h and g file or the a and b file.
TheJohnJarvinen Says:
Nov 17, 2011 - The first game is infact in the old india territory, It's the ukrainian variation I believe. The modern defense is 1.d4 g6

Nov 15, 2011 - @ 14:15 YES Maybe because I play a lot of blitz chess, but I see much potential in such exchange sacss.
